Within Staunton’s city limits are several streams and creeks, passing through neighborhoods and submerging beneath downtown. Staunton’s largest creek, Lewis Creek, runs through the center of downtown before joining the Middle River, the South Fork of the Shenandoah River, the Potomac River and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay. Lewis Creek, and all of the City of Staunton, fall within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. The quality and quantity of stormwater runoff flowing off lots, gardens, and yards and into our creeks and streams contributes significantly to the overall health of the region.

Landowner’s Action Guide to Staunton’s Watersheds includes five general approaches to managing stormwater runoff in lots, gardens, and yards where available space is limited. The guide describes five general site conditions and recommends possible methods for reducing stormwater runoff. Your lot, garden, or yard may be best suited for one or more of these methods. Actions each of us take to reduce or eliminate stormwater runoff from our lots, gardens, and yards directly impact the health of our waterways: within Staunton’s City limits and the within the region as a whole.
