The City of Staunton has a responsibility under the laws of the Commonwealth to maintain the privacy of our web site visitors:

“It is the policy of the Commonwealth of Virginia that personal information about citizens will be collected only to the extent necessary to provide the service of benefit desired; that only appropriate information will be collected; that the citizen shall understand the reason the information is collected and be able to examine their personal record which is maintained by a public body.” -- (Code of Virginia, §2.1-380 as amended)

This website adheres to that policy. The following statements reflect our determination to insure that our visitors are aware of the information being collected at this site:

No personally identifiable information is required by this site.

This Internet site offers visitors the opportunity to sign up for e-mail lists on specific topics of interest.  The e-mail lists held for these services are used exclusively for purposes explained to the participant at the time of sign-up.  Unless otherwise required by applicable law, these lists and related information are kept confidential and not disclosed or used for any other purpose.  Participants in these services always have the option of terminating their involvement.  Upon request, any participant's name is promptly and permanently removed from lists on city servers.  Information on signing up for and leaving these services is displayed on the appropriate list pages. Note that these e-mail lists may be subject to disclosure under Virginia's Freedom of Information Act if requested.  Litigation on such disclosures is ongoing and the city cannot assure future confidentiality.

Crown E-mail sent by website visitors via the various links on this website is treated as any other communication with the city.  That mail and its response may be subject to disclosure under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.

We analyze the use of our website on a regular basis to determine how well we are serving our visitors. This includes browser market share, times of peak activity, and “hit” summaries that indicate our most popular pages. Our web site logs are not personally identifiable. They are used to generate statistical data only.

Unless otherwise required by applicable law, any and all information collected at our website will be kept strictly confidential and will not be sold, rented, loaned or otherwise disclosed.
