Clerk of Council
The Clerk of City Council, Linda L. Little, maintains accurate records of the proceedings of Council and of boards and commissions which she has been designated by Council to serve. She is responsible for the posting and publishing of official actions of the Council and for the compilation of ordinances and resolutions having long-term or permanent effect.
Ms. Little originally began service with the City in the City Attorney’s Office in 2006 as Paralegal, and effective January 1, 2013 with the appointment by City Council, began joint service also as the Clerk of Council. In these dual roles, Ms. Little serves both the City Council and the City Attorney.
She brings to her dual roles very substantial experience in both the public and private sectors. She not only worked for the County of Augusta on zoning and subdivision matters but also was later employed by a private law firm and by the Virginia state court system. For more than 15 years, she was a paraprofessional and then a manager with the law firm of Vellines, Cobbs, Goodwin & Glass, based in the City of Staunton. Afterwards, she served several years in the Augusta County District Court Clerk’s Office, also located in the City of Staunton, gaining experience with the judicial system. In 2006, she joined the Staunton City Attorney’s office, playing a key role in the full range of transactional and litigation support for the City Attorney, who is the chief legal adviser for both the City government and the City school division.
Ms. Little is a former member of the Staunton Planning Commission and became a certified planning commissioner. She was voted Planning Commissioner of the Year during her service to the City and also served as Chair of the Planning Commission. In her role as Clerk of Council, in addition to assisting Council and its members, she attends and coordinates proceedings of the Planning Commission and of the Historic Preservation Commission. She is a member of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks, Virginia Municipal Clerks Association and the Virginia Local Government Paralegal Association.
Her office is located on the Second Floor of City Hall, where the City Attorney’s office also is located. While she maintains regular office hours and welcomes the opportunity to help Staunton citizens and others at any time, appointments are encouraged.
