This position is responsible for public safety, law enforcement, crime prevention, traffic control and accident investigation. Position requires HS diploma/GED, excellent verbal and written communication skills, customer service and the ability to analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action through thoughtful decision making. Successful candidates will possess the desire to solve problems by developing collaborative relationships with members of the community.
Hiring process can take approximately four to eight weeks and requires successful completion of employment application, written test, interview, background investigation, psychological evaluation, fitness test and pre-employment physical. Applicants that have applied in the past may apply again unless ineligible to hold DCJS law enforcement certification.

Interested individuals who hold current certification as a Police Officer through the Commonwealth of VA may, but are not required to, take the written test, but must submit a completed employment application with a copy of certification(s) no later than September 27, 2015 and will be required to successfully complete all other aspects of the hiring process. Public Safety Dispatcher
Public Safety Dispatchers serve a vital role in the City’s services. This is a perfect opportunity to join an outstanding team and take part in a rewarding career. Dispatchers receive emergency and non-emergency calls from the public and public safety personnel by radio and telephone, dispatch police, fire, and EMS in response to the identified need and accurately document all related incidents. Position requires the dispatcher to become certified in emergency medical dispatch (EMD) for calls involving critical illness or injury, the ability to work in stressful situations, prioritize tasks, make decisions quickly and have strict attention to detail. Excellent organizational, keyboarding, computing, customer service skills, the ability to adapt to change and the ability to work in a team environment required.
Must be able to work a 12-hour shift: 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on a rotating basis, including weekends and holidays. Starting annual salary: $29,032.

The Staunton Police Department is an internationally accredited, full-service law enforcement agency dedicated to serving the citizens of the City of Staunton, Virginia. The Department consists of fifty sworn officers and seventeen full-time civilian employees. In addition to providing twenty-four hour patrol coverage and criminal investigative functions, the Department is very active in community policing.
The Staunton Police Department sponsors Virginia Rules, mentorship/shadow, and School Resource Officer programs for the area's youth, a Citizen's Police Academy, Neighborhood and Business Watch programs, as well as a number of other crime prevention initiatives.
The Department operates the City's state-of-the-art Enhanced-911 Center. The E-911 Center, which serves as the primary answering point for the City's 9-1-1 calls, dispatches calls for service for police, fire, and the Staunton-Augusta Rescue Squad.
