Public Safety Dispatcher
Receives messages by radio and telephone, dispatches to police, fire, rescue personnel in response to the identified need and documents all related incidents. Position requires the ability to work in stressful situations, prioritize tasks and make decisions quickly. Excellent organizational skills, keyboarding skills and customer service skills required. Individual must be able to work 7 pm to 7 am shift including week-ends and holidays. Applicants are subject to a criminal records check and an extensive background investigation. Candidates who have been convicted of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude will be disqualified. Hiring range $13.15 - $15.12 plus benefits. The Staunton Police Department is an internationally accredited, full-service law enforcement agency dedicated to serving the citizens of the City of Staunton, Virginia. The Department consists of fifty sworn officers and seventeen full-time civilian employees. In addition to providing twenty-four hour patrol coverage and criminal investigative functions, the Department is very active in community policing.
The Staunton Police Department sponsors CYCLE, PULSAR, and School Resource Officer programs for the area's youth, a Citizen's Police Academy, Neighborhood and Business Watch programs, as well as a number of other crime prevention initiatives.
The Department operates the City's state-of-the-art Enhanced-911 Center. The E-911 Center, which serves as the primary answering point for the City's 9-1-1 calls, dispatches calls for service for police, fire, and the Staunton-Augusta Rescue Squad.
Announcement: 15th Citizen's Police Academy
September 20-October 25, 2010
Applications are now being accepted for the 15th Citizen's Police Academy. Classes will be held on Monday and Wednesday nights from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM. There will be at least one or two Saturdays as well. Applications must be in by September 3 by 4:00 PM. There is a limit of 15 students.
