The City of Staunton Police Department is seeking candidates for the position of Police Officer. This position is responsible for public safety, law enforcement, crime prevention, traffic control and accident investigation. Position requires HS diploma/GED, excellent verbal and written communication skills, customer service and the ability to analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action through thoughtful decision making. Hiring process can take approximately four to eight weeks and requires successful completion of employment application, written test, interview, background investigation, psychological evaluation, fitness test and pre-employment physical. Applicants that have applied in the past may apply again unless ineligible to hold DCJS law enforcement certification. A written test is scheduled for Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. at the Central Shenandoah Criminal Justice Training Academy, 3045 Lee Highway, Mt. Sidney VA 24486. In order to be considered, one must reserve a spot for the test by calling (540) 332-3826 AND complete a City of Staunton employment application online at www.staunton.va.us by April 20, 2014. Interested individuals who hold current certification as a Police Officer through the Commonwealth of VA are exempt from the written test but must submit a completed employment application with a copy of certifications by April 20, 2014 and will be required to successfully complete all other aspects of the hiring process. The Staunton Police Department is an internationally accredited, full-service law enforcement agency dedicated to serving the citizens of the City of Staunton, Virginia. The Department consists of fifty sworn officers and seventeen full-time civilian employees. In addition to providing twenty-four hour patrol coverage and criminal investigative functions, the Department is very active in community policing.
The Staunton Police Department sponsors Virginia Rules, mentorship/shadow, and School Resource Officer programs for the area's youth, a Citizen's Police Academy, Neighborhood and Business Watch programs, as well as a number of other crime prevention initiatives.
The Department operates the City's state-of-the-art Enhanced-911 Center. The E-911 Center, which serves as the primary answering point for the City's 9-1-1 calls, dispatches calls for service for police, fire, and the Staunton-Augusta Rescue Squad.
